Why choose Malta for your family holiday

A family holiday is quality time, laughing together, experiencing new cultures and cuisines together, collapsing into bed after a long day exploring or playing in the sea, sandy feet, sunkissed skin, a sense for adventure, learning something new and most importantly creating memories together.

Malta is a small island with a big heart and it is the perfect place to spend your family holiday. The island is safe, the locals are friendly and warm and you don’t have to travel far to appreciate the qualities and gems of Malta, it will feel like a home from home!

In this article, we will be exploring some of the attractions that Malta has to offer to appeal to most families:

Malta watersports

Sun and Sea

Mellieha Bay (Ghadira Bay) in the north of the island is Malta’s biggest beach and very family-friendly. With shallow waters and a sandy sea bed, it’s the perfect spot for younger children who can play safely in the sea. In the summer months, there is even an inflatable waterpark for the older children and a large array of watersport activities like water skiing and banana boat rides.
Another option is to cross over to the southwest of the island and visit Għar Lapsi which is a pretty rocky bay ideal for some sheltered snorkelling, after that, a short drive away is the Blue Grotto where you can climb aboard a traditional fishing boat and explore the Blue Grotto caves!

Adventure

Splash and Fun waterpark is great fun for all the family! With chutes and slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and an animation zone it certainly makes for an exciting day out! Located off the coast road in Bahar Ic Caghaq, a short drive from St Julians. One of the most popular attractions is Popeye Village, Malta’s very own film set and theme park! The film set is from the classic 1980’s musical Popeye, and it has remained to this day. Expect entertainment shows, boat rides, water trampolines, a beach lido and food outlets.

History

Malta is a historical paradise with ancient temples and ruins dating back to 3000 BC. So if it’s history that you’re after, you’re in the right place! For those wanting to get out and about and explore there are many locations around the island like Ħaġar Qim or St Pauls Catacombs, or if you can visit the Malta Experience, in Valletta for an audiovisual experience diving into the rich history of Malta’s fascinating past.

Dining out

Being a Mediterranean country the food is predominately based around this cuisine, though there are plenty of other options to suit all pallets including restaurant chains like Hard Rock Cafe and Wagamama or you can sample some of the local traditional dishes which can be found in most restaurants! Venture over to the Valletta Waterfront for some family-friendly restaurant choices.

Learn

If you would prefer a day out of the sun then Esplora is Malta’s very own interactive science museum, with over 200 exhibits including an activity centre with workshops and entertaining science shows! It is located in Kalkara, close to the Three Cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea and you can even get there by boat if you choose to combine your trip to Esplora with a boat tour around the Three Cities.
