We can’t wait to welcome new students to Maltalingua in March. We have lots of great activities for you both in the classroom and out of it. And there’s always a lot happening on the islands. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the special things that are taking place in Malta this March.

From 14 to 17 March, you can enjoy high culture at Valletta’s beautiful Manoel Theatre, which was built by the Knights of Malta in 1731. For the Bank of Valletta Opera Festival, a group of Maltese and international artists is performing “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “I Pagliacci”.

On 17 March, an event called Alarme takes us back in time to the days of Napoleon. Scenes from Napoleon’s invasion of the islands in 1798 and his army’s surrender to the British in 1800 are re-enacted. It’s easy to forget that it’s the 21st century.

On 26 March, Malta is playing against its neighbour to the north, Italy, in a qualifying match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Cheer for the Maltese players at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium!

Since 98 per cent of the Maltese population are Roman Catholic, Easter is a big deal on the islands. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, 28 March, people visit seven different churches to pray. On the next day, Good Friday, statues of Jesus and other biblical figures are carried through many villages and towns. Finally, Easter Sunday, 31 March is a joyful celebration. Make sure you get a traditional pastry, called “figolli”!

31 March is also Freedom Day, a public holiday. It celebrates the day – 31 March, 1979 – when the last British troops left the islands. Each year, there is a regatta, or series of boat races in Grand Harbour. Get something to eat or drink from the vendors along the harbour, and join in the excitement.
